Energetic opening day at Open Masters Games Abu Dhabi 2026

Abu Dhabi witnessed an energetic start to the Open Masters Games Abu Dhabi 2026 on Day 1 as athletes from around the world took to their respective sports, venues and waters to begin competition in what is set to be the most inclusive multi-sport festival ever staged in the region.

The Games, featuring more than 25,000 participants from over 90 nationalities across 38 disciplines, officially kicked off on 6 February 2026 and will run through 15 February, with competitions taking place at more than 20 world-class sporting venues across Abu Dhabi, Al Ain and Al Dhafra.

Paddling Into Action: Canoe & Kayak at Al Mirfa

Day 1 saw intense water-based competition in canoe and kayak events staged at Al Mirfa, where masters paddlers battled both each other and the elements. The scenic coastal setting hosted athletes of varying ages navigating the courses with strength, technique and tenacity, setting a high competitive tone for racing over the coming days.

Open Water Thrills: Swimming at Hudayriat Island

Meanwhile, at Hudayriat Island, the open-water swimming events got underway. Competitors of different age brackets took on the challenge of the open sea, delivering remarkable performances amid lively supporter turnout. The natural backdrop and calm waters made for both a beautiful and competitive day of swimming.

Court and Gym Action at ADNEC

Inside the Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre (ADNEC) athletes began their campaigns in several indoor sports:

Basketball: Teams took to the courts for spirited opening-day matchups, showcasing both veteran experience and fast-breaking play.

Weightlifting: Masters lifters from around the globe lifted heavy and set early benchmarks in strength and technique in front of enthusiastic crowds.

Badminton: Shuttlecock battles opened with dynamic rallies as players demonstrated precision and agility in a highly competitive field.

Table Tennis: Quick reflexes and intense exchanges marked the start of table tennis competition, with masters athletes delighting spectators with skillful play.

These halls at ADNEC buzzed with energy as competitors and supporters alike soaked in the spirit of athletic camaraderie at the Community Hub.

Track & Field Ignites at Zayed Sports City

At Zayed Sports City, one of the UAE’s iconic sporting hubs, the Track and Field events launched with passion and pace. Masters athletes took to the track and field arenas, competing in a range of running, jumping and throwing disciplines. The stands were filled with encouragement and applause as personal bests and inspiring performances unfolded throughout the day.

Day 1 of the Games did more than just start competitions — it set a tone of inclusivity, health, and lifelong athletic engagement. These Games have been designed to welcome competitors of all abilities and backgrounds, celebrating personal goals and the joy of sport at every age.
