The road to the Winter World Masters Games 2028 took an exciting step forward last week as the International Masters Games Association (IMGA) completed a comprehensive inspection visit to Finland. The IMGA toured the host regions of Lahti and Levi, both renowned for their sporting excellence, natural beauty, and deep-rooted winter sports culture.

Over several days, the IMGA met with local organisers, venue operators, and city officials to review preparations, inspect facilities, and experience the unique atmosphere both destinations will offer athletes from around the world.

Lahti: A city built for winter sport excellence

The visit began in Lahti, a city internationally recognised for its long tradition in Nordic skiing and its state-of-the-art sports infrastructure. The IMGA team explored the iconic Lahti Sports Centre, home to world-famous ski jumps, extensive cross-country ski tracks, and modern support facilities. The venue’s readiness, accessibility, and capacity to host large-scale events left a strong impression.

Lahti’s commitment to sustainability and athlete experience was another highlight, with the city demonstrating innovative planning in areas such as transportation, accommodation, and eco-friendly event operations. With its vibrant cultural scene and welcoming local community, Lahti is poised to offer a memorable hub for masters athletes in 2028.

Levi: A premier arctic sports destination

The inspection continued north to Levi, one of Finland’s leading winter resorts and an annual host of FIS World Cup alpine events. The IMGA delegation toured Levi’s alpine slopes, competition areas, training facilities, and its well-developed infrastructure designed to support thrilling winter sport.

Levi’s breathtaking Arctic landscape, reliable snow conditions, and world-class venue management were standout features during the visit. Organisers also showcased plans for side events, cultural programs, and activities that will allow athletes and supporters to experience Lapland’s distinctive charm—from northern lights to Finnish sauna traditions.

Following the visit, IMGA expressed confidence in Finland’s readiness and enthusiasm for hosting an exceptional edition of the Winter World Masters Games. With Lahti and Levi combining strong technical capabilities and authentic winter experiences, the 2028 Games promise to deliver a competition environment that is both inspiring and unforgettable.
