Ski Mountaineering

Ski Mountaineering

Ski mountaineering (abbreviated to skimo) is a skiing discipline that involves climbing mountains either on skis or carrying them, and then descending on skis. There are two major categories of equipment used, free-heel Telemark skis and skis based on Alpine skis, where the heel is free for ascents, but is fixed during descent.

Competitive ski mountaineering is typically a timed racing event that follows an established trail through challenging winter alpine terrain while passing through a series of checkpoints. Racers climb and descend under their own power using backcountry skiing equipment and techniques. More generally, ski mountaineering is an activity that variously combines ski touring, Telemark, backcountry skiing, and mountaineering.

Athlete Comments & Reviews

“I can only smile from ear to ear!”

“I’m going home with a nice set of medals, so happy. Smile says it all!”

“You might compete against World Champions”

“Masters Games, you never know who the competition is going to be until you have a few races. Quite often they’re former Olympians or World Champions in their day. You get a very broad spectrum of athletes and their abilities over their lives which is a really good thing really.”

“It’s the magic of the crowd, being with so many great people”

“I think just being part of the event has been the highlight of it all, winning would have been nice but didn’t really matter in the end. It’s just being there with everybody and meeting new people.”
